Cranswick Producer Thomas Dent Voted Producer Of The Year

Thomas Dent of Penrith in Cumbria, was awarded Pig Producer of the Year last week at the Pig & Poultry Marketing Awards.

The judges felt Thomas Dent has dramatically improved and expanded his business on several levels. Not only has the number of sows and size of the operation increased in response to the requirements of the processor and retailer but the whole system has been changed to all in/all out production. Along with vaccination programmes, this change has led to dramatic improvements in pig health with a consequent very marked improvement in growth rates and overall productivity. The rapid accreditation of all units in the Freedom Foods Assurance Scheme (perhaps the most rigorous of the schemes) is a tremendous achievement.
